Really?!?

I am just about to close the books on my first day in Latvia.  I have really enjoyed walking as a family through the cobbled streets of "Old Riga".  As an American, it is hard to grasp the idea that people have been walking these same roads for over 800 years...it was established in 1208.

During our first day, we have received nothing but a gracious welcome from everyone we have met.  At the same time, I have been silently struck by the toughness and resilience of these kind folks.   How can you not be impressed by a people who fought off Vikings, survived the Nazis, and endured crushing Soviet occupation to rise again as a nation?

After an authentic Latvian meal (Check out where we ate), while meandered the narrow streets for a bit, we turned a corner to behold this garish monstrosity (see below...you have been warned).  I was dumbstruck...  Not to go Anthony Bourdain on you all, but really?  Are you serious?  This is what we have to offer this great Baltic people?  For all you social networking folks, all I could do was SMH.  But, as I walked away, I comforted myself with the thought that these strong and gracious Latvian people could even survive this new onslaught of baco-bit filled quesadillas and servers covered with "flair".

But, I digress, we are getting our daughter in the morning!  All is well in the world.  Good night for one last time as the Bechtle 5...

  2. John, you are a man after my own heart. Among my good friends there are many qualities, but "eager adventuresome eater" is among the best. I was struck by your description of the resilience of the Latvian people in all they've overcome. No doubt your new daughter has absorbed a good degree of that resilience to get her through her hard life. I expect that will be one of her greatest gifts as God uses her for his glory. We are so happy for what tomorrow means!

  3. So I look how our life has changed since we adopted our Layla a year ago. I remember your email telling us that you had Baxter her 1/2 brother. We are so amazed and thankful to be able to follow your amazing story. You and Laila both have that biggest hearts and so full of love. Hopefully we will be able to meet up and meet all 4 of your daughters and of course Baxter too. You will be in our thoughts and prayers....May God bless.
